Original Task E: Solve. 3 5/6 - 1 1/6

 

Modified Task E: When Joan arrived at Sarah's birthday party, she noticed Sarah's mother had made 4 whole cakes for all the guests. When it was time to eat the cake, all the guests got in line and when it was Joan's turn to receive a piece of cake, there were 3 5/6 cakes left. After every guest had gone through the line and gotten a piece of cake, there were still 1 1/6 cakes left. How much cake was given away from the time Joan received her piece of cake to after every guest had gotten their piece of cake? 

 

• Use Cuisenaire rods to find your answer and draw how you solved the answer with the rods on paper. 

• ​Use another strategy of your choice to find the answer and explain how the two strategies are related.
